Opinions differ about the eating of eggs. Sometimes you hear ideas that contradict each other outright. Others say that you should eat an egg regularly, because of the many good substances that an egg would contain. What exactly is it? How many eggs per week is wise?
Cholesterol in an egg
In the first place, you should know that there is a lot of cholesterol in an egg. Excess cholesterol is a potential cause for cardiovascular disease. For this reason, it is often advised to eat a limited number of eggs per week. The feeding center therefore also has a maximum of three eggs per week to eat.
Eggs, however, are not the only food that contains cholesterol. In products such as fat, meat, biscuits, crisps and full dairy products, there is also a relatively large amount of cholesterol. If you eat a lot of this type of food, it is wise to limit the number of eggs you eat. But if you have a diet or diet, with little other diet with high cholesterol, you can safely eat more eggs.
Cholesterol is not entirely wrong
In addition, cholesterol is also something that a person needs. The body uses this substance to make a number of things, including hormones, bile and all kinds of cells. So we need a certain amount of cholesterol to stay healthy. It is important to find the right balance here, as is true for most nutrients. An egg can therefore be a good way to keep your cholesterol intake up to standard.
Extra sensitive to cholesterol
Some people should be more careful with the cholesterol intake than others. Diabetics in particular have to keep an eye on their cholesterol. In addition, the chance of a higher cholesterol is also often genetically determined. People who suffer from familial hypercholesterolemia, or family members who suffer from high cholesterol, should also be careful. In that case it is advisable to follow the advice of the food center and not to eat more than three eggs per week.
Salmonella is a bacterium that is mainly associated with eggs. However, there is not really a connection with the number of eggs you eat per day or per week. You run a risk of salmonella poisoning when you eat an egg that is not yet sufficiently prepared. So do not eat raw eggs. Make sure that your eggs are always well cooked or fried, then the risk of salmonella is very small.
In other countries we also see other advice than in the Netherlands. In for example the United Kingdom and the United States, one egg per day is within the norm. That advice is based on research carried out. These studies have shown that the risk of cardiovascular disease does not increase as a result of eating seven eggs per week. The research covers a duration of more than ten years. The Nutrition Center has not done such extensive research. Therefore the advice of a maximum of three eggs per week does not seem so reliable.
Other nutrients in an egg
Besides cholesterol, an egg naturally contains all kinds of other nutrients. Some of these are very important for the human body. An egg contains, among other things, certain vitamins and minerals, proteins and lime. An egg consists of two parts: the egg white and the egg yolk.
What is in the protein
There are few bad substances in the protein. The protein is the food that a chicken eats while it grows. The protein consists mainly of proteins. These proteins have a very high nutritional value and contain virtually no fat.
What is in the egg yolk
The egg yolk contains very different nutrients. Among others calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus and the vitamins A, E, K, B6, B12. You can also find vitamin D in an egg yolk. Thus an egg belongs to the small group of food that naturally contains vitamin D.
The egg yolk thus contains a large dose of healthy substances for the human body. In addition, the egg yolk contains the most calories and fat. For that reason, some people think you can not eat the yolk better. The disadvantage is that you also lose the most important nutrients of an egg. You can also find the cholesterol of an egg in the egg yolk.
Eating an egg is certainly a good element in a healthy diet. Research has shown that an egg per day has no noticeable effect on your cholesterol. In addition, eggs contain a lot of healthy substances. Unless you are a diabetic or have to keep an eye on all your cholesterol, you can safely eat up to seven eggs a week.
